Delays at Customs Agency hampering processing operations for customs brokers

by June 1st, 2018

The Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association of Jamaica says several delays in processing using the Asycuda system at the Jamaica Customs Agency, are hampering operations.

President Mitzie Burke-Green, says continuing issues with the Asycuda clearance system, as well as, challenges with the Trade Board and the Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited, are stymieing their commercial operations and the businesses of their clients.

She says the matter has been on-going for about 3 months, and even today the system froze up again.

Mrs. Burke Green says, the problems have been compounded by delays at Kingston Freeport Terminal.

She says the customs agency has been in contact with the association, and some extra time was granted to do processing.

In the meantime, the Association says another issue affecting operations is in relation to the Trade Board and the system for used vehicle imports.

Mrs. Burke-Green says it is taking over two months for pre-inspection results to be sent from Japan to the trade board, resulting in severe dislocations in business.

She says many clients are unable to complete processing for vehicles.

In light of the delays affecting processing, Mrs. Burke Green is calling on Kingston Freeport Terminal to waive penal charges.
