by June 5th, 2018

Effective January 2019, government will impose restrictions on sugary drinks in schools.

This was announced by Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, during his sectoral debate presentation, this afternoon (Jun 5).

Dr. Tufton lamented the challenges citizens face with obesity, and related non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes.

He says discussions are being held with manufacturers on the issue, and many had already adjusted their formula.

Dr. Tufton says, the health ministry, in collaboration with the education ministry, is finalizing plans, for a policy on nutrition in the school system.

He says the policy is aimed at getting young people, to change their consumption habits.

He says the sugary drinks restriction, that will take effect next year, targets beverages that contain added sugar or syrup, not juice or milk.

The minister says the restriction will also be implemented in the public health system.
