by June 5th, 2018

Mining Minister Robert Montague, says government is putting in place contingency measures to counter any effects from challenges at U C Rusal’s Ewarton plant, due to sanctions by the United States.

In a statement to parliament this afternoon (Jun 5) Mr. Montague says that while the US Tresuary department recently announced a delay in the application of the sanctions, the threat to the Windalco Ewarton operation remains.

He says government is committed to protecting the workers, the environment and the revenue to Jamaica.

The minister says among the actions being taken, is intensifying discussions with the US Treasury to secure waiver for Jamaica.

He says the talks are progressing favourably, but government offers no guarantees.

According to Mr. Montague, government will employ best efforts, to ensure that critical supplies, which include fuel, power, and other chemicals, are supplied to the Ewarton plant.

Another action is to engage and ensure the banking sector’s support. He says government has taken steps to assure the banking sector of any issue or fears, based on information.

Additionally, government is working with Jamaica Bauxite Institute and the Ministry of Finance, among other stakeholders, to be prepared for contingencies.

Mr. Montague called for calm and keeping the lines of communication open, noting that the government is working toward a sustainable solution.
