Roston Chase powers West Indies to a crushing 226-run victory over Sri Lanka

Off spinner Roston Chase powered the West Indies to a crushing 226-run victory over Sri Lanka just after lunch on the final day of the first test yesterday.

This as the tourists buckled under the pressure at Queens Park oval in Port of Spain, suffering their first test match defeat at the hands of the Caribbean side in ten years.

Set a challenging target of 453 to win, the Sri lankans who resumed on the final day on 176 for 3 crashed for 226 all out just after lunch.

Chase triggered the final collapse in which five wickets fell for just eight runs.

Earlier Kusal Mendis scored his fifth test century 102, Angello Matthews scored 31, Denish Chandimal added 27 Niroshan Dickwella made 19 and Dilruwan Perera was left unbeaten 3 .

His dismissal of Denish Chandimal for 27 in the last over before the lunch interval broke the back of the tourists’ resistance and he claimed three of the remaining four wickets to fall to finish with an impressive figure of 4 for 15 off 8.2 overs.

Davendra Bishoo snatched 3 for 48 to finish with 4 wickets overall in the match.

Final scores in the game West Indies 414 for 8 declared and 223 for 7 declared, Sri-Lanka 185 and 226 all out.

The Caribbean men have now taken a one nil lead in the three match series, and the second game starts on Thursday in Gros Islet, St Lucia.
