Usain Bolt scores penalty at Old Trafford in Soccer Aid charity match

by June 11th, 2018

Sprint king Usain Bolt, despite converting his spot kick, was unable to prevent his ‘Rest of the World’ team from going down 3-2 on penalties to Team England in Sunday’s Soccer Aid charity match at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United.

Man of the match Bolt, who was captain of the World XI squad, had a goal chalked off for offside and later hit the crossbar, but returned to convert a penalty in the shootout low into the corner after the game ended 3-3.

Goals from Darren Bent and Jez Lynch put England ahead.

But Robbie Keane and Juan Sebastian Veron have deservedly got the World XI back level heading into the halftime break.

However former Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf shot the ‘Rest of the World’ into a 3-2 lead after which Michael Owen levelled for England.

Both sides scored their first two penalties before Kevin Pietersen was denied by England’s celebrity keeper David Harewood.

He then denied fellow stopper and Westlife singer Nicky Byrne to leave England one penalty from victory.

They failed to take their chance though as Paddy McGuinness and Lee Mack both failed to find the net.

But actor Blake Harrison a former star of “The Inbetweeners,” was England’s unlikely hero and netted the decisive spot kick to spark wild scenes among the England players.

Bolt in the meantime also walked away with the Best Shirt award, in  the match which featured a host of former players including Yaya Toure, Robert Pires, Patrick Kluivert and also saw Manchester United legend Eric Cantona making his return to Old Trafford.

It helped UNICEF raise just £5,540,249 for charity.
