Day of upsets as Mexico shocks Germany and Brazil drop points

by June 18th, 2018

A day of upsets at the World Cup saw defending champions Germany and five time winners Brazil both dropping points on Sunday.

The Germans, aiming to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back titles, got their campaign underway with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Concacaf giants Mexico.

The lone goal of the game was scored by Irving Lozano in the 35th minute and sent shockwaves through the world and especially Mexico City, where an ‘artificial earthquake’ was put down to the pounding of joyous feet.

Mexico had 13 shots in the first half-hour and it was with No 14 that they took a deserved 35th-minute lead.

Mats Hummels was turned inside out by a midfield one-two and Lozano gained possession wide left in the box before checking inside to drive past Manuel Neuer at his near post.

The goal sparked a brief German response in which Toni Kroos crashed a free-kick against the bar after a crucial fingertip save from Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Mexico with the result surged to the top of Group F on 3 points while defeat for Germany raises the unthinkable possibility that they could become the fourth World Cup winning nation out of the last five to go out in the group stages of the following tournament.

Action in Group E saw Brazil playing to a 1-1 draw with a determined Switzerland in a game that saw Phillipe Coutinho and Steven Zuber trading goals on either side of the half-time break.

Both teams are now tied on a point and are 2 behind Serbia who carved out a 1-0 win over Costa Rica.
