PAJ: Reynolds Pier to be redeveloped

The Port Authority of Jamaica is set to redevelop the Reynolds Pier in Ocho Rios, St. Ann allow the resort town to accommodate more cruise ships.

Speaking at the opening of the newly renovated Ocho Rios Fishing Village last evening, President of the Authority, Professor Gordon Shirley, shared his plans to develop a second pier in the terminal.

He notes that there will be a number of smaller projects associated with that development.

And, fisher folk and vendors in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, have welcomed the developments at the newly renovated Ocho Rios Fishing Village.

The new commercialised facility features an upgraded harbour for the fishermen, an entertainment centre, gift shops, and several restaurants.

Although many people were doubtful about the project, and whether local people would be the beneficiaries, the fisher folk and vendors have retained their shops.

Speaking at the official opening of the facility yesterday, President of the Port Authority of Jamaica, Professor Gordon Shirley noted that for the original inhabitants of the fishing village, the culmination of the project is a promise kept.

In the meantime, Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay, Michael Belnavis, said the authorities are committed to protecting the interest of all fisherfolk.

He said many people did not believe that the authorities could be trusted to deliver or be transparent in the development of the Ocho Rios fishing beach.

Mr. Belnavis stated that despite the apprehension about the project the local authority was committed to delivering to the people.
