Holness arrives in Namibia for state visit; Namibia to honour Garvey

Jamaica’s first National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey will be honoured by the people of Namibia with the renaming of a street in the capital city.

The ceremony is expected to be held tomorrow and attended by Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness, the President of Namibia, the son of Marcus Garvey – Dr. Julius Garvey, as well as Culture Minister Olivia Grange and other dignitaries.

As reported by NBC News, Mr. Holness arrived in Namibia earlier today, to much ceremonial fanfare and traditional greetings from Namibian officials.

Mr. Holness was also surprised with a cake in celebration of his 46th birthday, today.

The Prime Minister is leading a delegation on a historic state visit to the African nation.

Already, Mr. Holness has engaged in a brief courtesy call with the Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia, and held a short meeting with the president of the Republic of Namibia.

Both leaders expressed sincere appreciation for the strong ties between Jamaica and Namibia and spoke of the history of cooperation between the two countries in relation to Namibia’s independence struggle.

In addition to the street naming in honour of Garvey tomorrow, Mr. Holness will commence the main program of his state visit, where he will hold official talks with the Namibian President, during which an MOU on cooperation in the field of sports and one for political consultations, will be signed.

The Prime Minister will also meet with members of the Namibian private sector at a luncheon to be hosted by the Namibian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
