Fowler’s West Coast Fever beat Dehaney’s Melbourne Vixens to secure finals berth

by July 28th, 2018

Jhaniele Fowler was once again at her dominating best as the West Coast Fever become the first side to guarantee a place in the finals of the Suncorp Super Netball League after notching a 68-55 win over the Melbourne Vixens.

The lopsided result over a Vixens team that featured Jamaican defender Kadie-Ann Dehaney saw the Fever taking a 7-point lead at the top of the table with just one round left in the regular season.

Fowler led the way with a game high 62 goals from 66 attempts, an effort that saw her increase her tally to a league best 720 goals. She is also the only player in the league to score over 600 goals with her nearest rival Caitlin Bassett (Sunshine Coast Lightning) on 512.

The Fever meanwhile occupy top spot on 70 points – 7 ahead of defending champions Sunshine Coast who battled to a 61-51 win over the NSW Swifts.

The Vixens who dropped to 4th on 57 points may now face a do-or-die showdown with the Lightning in the final round of the season.

Action in round 13 concludes with Romelda Aiken suiting up for the Queensland Firebirds against Shimona Nelson and the bottom of the table Adelaide Thunderbirds. Giants Netball also play away to Magpies Netball at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne.

With the Lightning trampling the Swifts to claim all eight competition points, the Firebirds need to do a similar demolition job against the Thunderbirds or the Lightning will finish the round in the top four.
