Venus Williams, Karolina Pliskova and Julia Goerges all advanced to the second round of the WTA Rogers Tennis Cup yesterday as rain curtailed the schedule in Montreal.
The 19-year-old American Caroline Dolehide produced a competitive showing against seven-time grand slam singles champion particularly in the first set, but the 13th seed williams ultimately asserted her authority to win 7-5 6-1.
In an all-Czech first-round encounter, world number nine Pliskova emerged unscathed from a tough contest against Katerina Siniakova, beating her compatriot 6-4, 6-4, while world number 10 Goerges overcome Timea Babos 3-6, 7-6 , 6-4.
Meanwhile, other players advancing includes Anett kontaveit, Lucie Safarova and Magdalena Rybarikova .
