Jackson wants Montague to be sanctioned

by August 11th, 2018

Opposition Spokesman on National security, Fitz Jackson has called for Robert Montague to be sanctioned, in relation to his handling of an appeal, for the return of a firearm license.

Yesterday, the former National Security Minister rejected claims of impropriety, in the wake of allegations that a person of questionable character was granted a gun license after an appeal was filed with the firearm licensing authority.

In a statement today, Mr. Jackson said the recent revelation that Montague overruled the recommendations of the country’s intelligence and security authorities and granted firearm licenses to persons with adverse findings is unnerving, considering the high murder rate being experienced across the island.

In the case of the so-called ‘national security asset’, he said Montague’s explanation that he granted the license because that individual was so deemed, is an invention to justify the unethical use of power.

Mr. Jackson said Montague should be sanctioned for this reckless undertaking.

He called for the current National Security Minister Horace Chang to immediately establish an independent audit of the 29 cases that were reviewed under Montague’s watch, and overturn the decisions, as he did in the revocation of the used car policy.
