Govt to set up performing arts high school in St James

by August 14th, 2018

The Education Minister has announced that a high school dedicated to the performing arts will be established in St. James.

Senator Ruel Reid says the institution is one of 17 that will be built by his administration in short order.

The minister says the school will be established based on recommendations from the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to its member states.

He was speaking at the 49th annual general assembly for the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, today (Aug 14).

In the meantime, the Education Minister says schools need to ensure that they incorporate culturally sensitive material in teaching and testing practices.

Ruel Reid says students need to learn in an environment that is culturally relatable.

He says it is for this reason, that he gave instructions to ministry personnel to ensure that testing items for the new primary exit profile, pep, were culturally sensitive.

He notes that he would also like to see more Garveyism being taught in local schools.
