JTA calls for continuation of GSAT

by August 21st, 2018

The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) is calling for the continuation of the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) for another three years.

According to the association, the education sector is not yet ready, for the full introduction of the new Primary Exit Profile (PEP).

Newly installed President of the JTA, Dr. Garth Anderson, says if the pep is to become the new assessment and placement for the nation’s children, it should be gradually phased in, starting with students in grade three.

Dr. Anderson says the education ministry should partner with teacher training colleges, to prepare teachers for the new curriculum.

He states that consultations have revealed that the country’s teachers are not ready to implement the tasks, embedded in pep.

Meanwhile, he says the full implementation of PEP during the new school year 2018/2019 is on a track to fail, as pep remains a mystery to stakeholders.

Dr. Anderson says parents, teachers and students are still anxious about the implementation of PEP despite several workshops held by the Education Ministry.
