J Wray & Nephew closes Holland Estate & Casa Marantha; over 200 now jobless

by August 23rd, 2018

One of the trade unions representing workers at Appleton Estate has stated that it expects the transition process for workers to be smooth following the closure of the Holland Estate and factory, as well as the Casa Marantha estate in St. Elizabeth.

J. Wray and Nephew announced that the company had to close operations at the 3 facilities, as part of a rationalisation process, citing financial losses and the reducing cost of sugar.

Over 240 workers are affected.

The workers are represented by the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union, the University and Allied Workers Union and the National Workers Union.

Vice President of the UAWU Clifton Grant told Irie FM News that 2 weeks ago, the company made the unions aware of the decision to close operations, and discussions started on the redundancy process for workers.

He said J. Wary and Nephew has also allocated millions of dollars for other benefits to workers, including scholarships.

Mr. Grant added that workers will get counselling and financial advice during sessions starting next week.
