Govt to reconstitute National Heroes Committee; Ms Lou up for consideration

by September 7th, 2018

The government has signalled its intention to reconstitute the National Heroes Committee that will, among other things, consider the nomination of Louise Bennett Coverley for the designation.

Ms. Lou was honoured today, on the 99th anniversary of her birth, during a function in Gordon Town, St. Andrew, where a statue was unveiled.

The event, which was carried live on Irie FM, saw tributes from Prime Minister Andrew Holness, and Culture Minister Olivia Babsy Grange, as well as Bongo Herman, and Barbara Gloudon.

Speaking in an interview with Irie FM’s Kabu Maat Kheru, Culture Minister Olivia Babsy Grange outlined the reasons for today’s celebration.

These include the fact that Ms. Lou taught Jamaicans to be proud of their language.

Ms. Grange said the Prime Minister is expected to announce the new National Heroes Committee, soon.

The installation of the statue, done by sculptor Basil Watson, is part of the government’s plan to establish Ms. Lou Square in Gordon Town, as a lasting tribute to the mother of Jamaican culture.

The official renaming will be done next year on Ms. Lou’s 100th birthday.
