Department of Corrections improves suicide monitoring mechanism

by September 27th, 2018

The Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) is commending the Department of Correctional Services, for significant improvement in preventing suicides among juveniles, in its care.

Indecom had made some recommendations about procedures and monitoring of juveniles in custody, following the suicide of Vanessa Wint in 2012.

A coroner’s Inquest into Wint’s death found that the neglect of staff at the Horizon Remand Centre contributed to the teen girl’s death, because they failed to ensure that an adequate suicide watch mechanism was in place.

Commissioner of Indecom Terrence Williams revealed at a press conference this morning (Sep 27) that since 2012, only 2 suicides were recorded.

Commissioner Williams said since 2015, there has been no record of a suicide.

He said the correctional department has implemented better systems of evaluating risks, and monitoring wards for suicides.
