Reggae Girls go down to Canada in CWC opener

by October 6th, 2018

Jamaica’s Reggae Girls, despite a creditable performance, came out 2-0 losers to Canada in their Group C opener at the Concacaf Women’s Championship at HEB Park in Edinburg, Texas on Friday night.

Forward Nichelle Prince led the way scoring twice for the Canadians who are now undefeated in 6 games against Jamaica in the Concacaf Women’s Championship.

Canada enjoyed a huge possession advantage in the opening half and took the lead in the 33rd minute after Jamaican defender Dominique Bond-Flasza’s clearance from a corner fell fortuitously to Prince who fired from just to the left of the penalty spot past goalkeeper Sydney Schneider into the lower right corner.

Prince would give the Maple Leaves more breathing room in the 79th minute as she ran onto an Adriana Leon pass before burying the past Schneider from eight yards for her ninth international goal.

The result also boosted the Canadians into second place behind Costa Rica who lead on goal difference after rushing to an 8-0 win over Cuba in the opening game of the doubleheader.

The Jamaicans now turn their attention to Monday’s do or die clash against the Costa Ricans. Canada will face Cuba.

The competition continues on Sunday with the United States meeting Panama and Mexico opposing Trinidad & Tobago.

Teams are vying to secure a spot at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
