by October 19th, 2018

School administrators have been examining several options, as they deal with a shortage of teachers for some subjects.

Among the suggestions is a greater use of technology.

At the same time parents are not sitting idly by, with many turning to private lessons to get their children ready for exams.

In this, the conclusion of a special report on how some schools in St. Ann are coping with a teacher shortage, Principal of York Castle High Raymon Treasure suggests that technology and video conferencing in particular   is good option to address the shortage of teachers.

Brown’s Town High Principal Alfred Thomas is not opposed to the idea, but he has a concern about safety of the equipment.

Meanwhile, Principal Anniona Jones of Marcus Garvey Technical High supports the idea of video conferencing of classes, but says some schools, including hers, have infrastructure issues to rectify first.

Ms. Jones explains that her school, like others, are offering housing as part of efforts to woo teachers to the schools.

She also wants to see a more coordinated approach to resolving teacher shortage.

At the same time, parents are not sitting idly by, as their children  prepare for exams, some have turned to  private lessons to fill the gap where schools don’t have specific teachers.

Some schools have also utilized past students now at the CAPE level to help teach students in the lower school, in order to free up teachers to work with students preparing for CSEC.
