Govt clears streetlight debt with JPS

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has indicated that government has cleared its street light bill with the Jamaica Public Service (JPS).

The company had been owed over $7 b and earlier this year just over half of the amount was paid, with a promise that the balance would be made before the end of this year.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Douglas Castle, St. Ann on Thursday McKenzie said the debt was paid.

He said in response to the payment, the JPS has committed to fix thousands of defective street lights by next year March.

The minister also advised that divisional councillors can now make requests for the installation of new street lights.
