Over 5 thousand taxi operators request licences under liberalization programme

by November 2nd, 2018

More than 5,300 persons have so far requested road licences, under the public transport liberalization pilot.

The pilot, which was launched in September, is intended to get unlicensed operators in the public transport sector, to become licensed.

It will end on Friday, November 30.

Corporate Communication Manager at the Transport Authority, Peta-Kene Williams says prospective operators and investors have 20 days left to ensure compliance with the law.

She says a number of unlicensed operators, particularly in the townships are still non-compliant.

Under the pilot, prospective operators/investors may access road licences for 1, 260 routes across the island, 100 spaces on select JUTC sub-franchise routes, contract carriage, and hackney taxi road licences.

Ms. Williams says for the first time in several years, the authority is allowing persons to apply for hackney carriage services in the rural parishes.

They include St. James, St. Ann, Westmoreland, Trelawny, Manchester, and in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region.

According to Ms. Williams, the results of the pilot will be part of the consideration and review of the proposal to reform the transportation sector.
