Trade Unions concerned about fate of Petrojam

by January 15th, 2019

Don’t give up on Petrojam.

That’s the call from the Union of Clerical Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) which represents the majority of the workers at the state owned oil refinery.

Ucase General Secretary John Levy, who spoke at a media luncheon in Kingston today, said amidst the controversy surrounding the refinery, the government should not turn its back on the company.

He added that despite allegations of corruption at the refinery, Petrojam should not be negatively labelled.

Mr. Levy reiterated that he is not in support of a suggestion to close the company.

Cementing his support of continued operations at Petrojam and citing one specific instance, he said the company has had a positive impact on the country.

And the Ucase General Secretary is suggesting that the public should be given the opportunity to purchase shares in Petrojam.

Recently, the government announced its intentions of reclaiming the shares held by Venezuela in Petrojam.

The government also noted that it received an offer from a company to purchase shares in the oil refinery, however, the offer was rejected

Mr. Levy, says he is not in support of any one private sector organization taking full ownership of the oil refinery.

He adds that he is not in support of a wholesale giveaway of the entity.

The Ucase General Secretary says he is optimistic that the company can be turned around for the benefit of its employees and the country.
