by January 20th, 2019

Roger Federer’s bid for a hat-trick of Australian Open titles and a seventh in total has been crushed, as Greek wunderkind Stefanos Tsitsipas rose up to floor the Swiss master and become his nation’s first quarter-finalist in a major.

In a match pitting the oldest and youngest players left in the men’s draw, the 20-year-old Tsitsipas overhauled Federer 6-7 , 7-6,  7-5, 7-6 under the lights of Rod Laver Arena.

Tsitsipas’s win sparked delirium among Greek fans out in force at Melbourne Park.

“I’m the happiest man on Earth right now,” Tsitsipas said in his courtside interview.

“I cannot describe it.”

Tsitsipas said the victory meant so much to him, as he grew up idolising Federer

“Roger is a legend of our sport. So much respect for him,” he said.

“I have been analysing him since the age of six. It was a dream come true for me just being on Rod Laver [Arena], facing him.

“And winning at the end, there is no way I cannot describe it.”
