Usain Bolt retires from football

by January 22nd, 2019

Eight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt has announced he is done pursuing a professional career in football after a brief stint last year with Australian A-league club Central Coast Mariners.

Bolt spent two months training with the Mariners but left in November after the club failed to find financial backing for a professional deal.

The 32 year old speaking to Reuters described his time in Australia as “A good experience. I really enjoyed just being in a team and it was different from track and field and it was fun while it lasted.”

The highlight of Bolt’s short-lived football career was a two-goal performance against Macarthur South West United on October 12.

The triple Olympic champion also declined a two-year contract offer from a semi-professional team from Malta and spent time training with Norwegian team Stromsgodset and German giants Borussia Dortmund.

According to Bolt, his focus now lies with his various commercial endeavours.

“I’m now moving into different businesses, I have a lot of things in the pipeline, so as I say, I’m just dabbling in everything and trying to be a business man now.”

Bolt in the meantime will be in South Africa where he has been announced as the host of the Sun Met.

The event dubbed “Africa’s richest race day” is due to take place on Saturday January 26 at the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town.
