Half centuries by Chase, Hope & Hetmyer highlight day one for Windies vs England

The West Indies made a good start against England before the visitors wrestled the advantage away with a four-wicket burst late in the final session on the opening day of the first Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Led by half centuries by Shai Hope, Roston Chase and Shimron Hetmeyer, the Windies after electing to bat closed the day at 268-8 after earlier being well set at 240-4.

The introduction of the new ball saw the home team losing 4 wickets for 24 runs with Kemar Roach (0), Jason Holder (5), Shane Dowrich (0) and Roston Chase (54) in that procession.

The Windies dominated the opening session led by Test debutante John Campbell who hit 44 after facing 53 deliveries in an innings where he stroked 8 boundaries.

The Jamaican also put on 53 for the opening wicket with Kraigg Braithwaite who made 40.

Hope, meanwhile, completed his 5th Test half century, facing 148   balls and cracking 6 boundaries before falling for 57.

Hetmeyer is on 56 not out at the close, so far hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes while Chase struck 5 fours and a six on his way to 56 after sharing in a 4th wicket 46 run partnership with Hope.

Darren Bravo, back in the side after two years faced 5 balls before he fell cheaply for 2.

James Anderson ended the day with 4-33 while Ben Stokes picked up 3-47 and Moeen Ali claimed 1-59.
