Jamaica falls on Corruption Perception Index ranking

by January 29th, 2019

Jamaica has a corruption problem.

This as Jamaica has fallen two places in the 2018 Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI).

Executive Director of the National Integrity Action, Professor Trevor Munroe made the revelation earlier today (Jan 29) in Kingston.

Noting that Jamaica also scored a CPI of 44 in 2017 and 39 in 2016, Munroe says the country is slipping backwards.

He said the country is now ranked 70 out of 180 countries.

Munroe said it will take a collaborative effort to remedy Jamaica’s corruption issue.

Meanwhile, Munroe says cases of corruption at Petrojam played a major role in the recorded drop in Jamaica’s overall corruption ranking.

He notes that despite knowledge of blatant corruption at the state-owned oil refinery, no one has been charged.

Munroe also cited the lack of transparency at the National Insurance Fund and the failure of the Office of the Prime Minister to provide a report on the assets and liabilities of parliamentarians as contributors to the spike in corruption.
