Battery thieves arrested and charged

Detectives attached to the Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch (CTOC), have arrested and charged two men, after it is alleged that they were found in possession of batteries belonging to telecommunications operators.

Reports are that about 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, CTOC members conducted an operation in Farm Town District, St. Ann, which resulted in the recovery of 38 radio base station batteries.

37-year-old Cassius Campbell, a scrap metal dealer of Farm Town, was arrested and charged.

Meanwhile on Saturday, May 09, another operation was carried out in Darliston District, Westmoreland and 43 batteries were recovered, which led to the arrest and charge of 52-year-old businessman Hensley Johnson.

Both were charged with receiving stolen property and are scheduled to appear in court on May 26 and the 27.

According to police, the batteries which were stolen from cell sites in St. Ann, Westmoreland, St. James and Trelawny have an estimated street value of $9 million.
