Electoral Commission reminds candidates about campaign financing rules

by March 1st, 2019

The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) has sought to remind election candidates and contributors, that they should observe campaign financing laws.

In a statement today (Mar 1) the ECJ said, election campaign financing and the reporting of campaign expenditure for all future national elections, including by-elections, will be regulated by the representation of the people act, and the election campaign financing regulations.

Both pieces of legislation are intended to govern the funding of election campaigns, and prescribe the manner in which contributions may be sourced and subsequently reported.

The law provides that persons, companies and other entities, as well Jamaican diaspora groups may make contributions to political parties or candidates during a campaign period.

A campaign period begins at such time that an election or by-election of the members of the House of Representatives is officially announced, and ends twenty-four hours before the time which is fixed for the opening of the polls.
