by May 15th, 2015

The massive bush fires that have been raging in the hills of East Rural St. Andrew for some two weeks have been extinguished.

Firefighters pulled out of the area Thursday.

The fire has been burning in the area for some two weeks now, leaving a trail of disaster.

At least six homes were destroyed, two damaged, crops and animals have died and families displaced.

Preliminary estimates indicate that over 500 acres of agricultural lands have been destroyed by the bush fires resulting in a loss of crops valued at some $200 million.

Fire chief for Kingston and St. Andrew, Superintendent Sean Martin says 65 fire personnel were on the ground up to Thursday.

He says the fires are now under control.

Superintendent Martin says, only small pockets of fire can be seen in Craig Hill and Tower Hill up to late Thursday evening.

In the meantime, the Gordon Town community centre in St Andrew remains open as an emergency response centre, for residents displaced by bush fires.

Member of Parliament Damion Crawford says Food for the Poor has responded since the opening of the centre with the provision of food items, mattresses, and blankets

He says no one has utilized the centre as yet. Mr Crawford adds that the displaced persons have chosen to stay with families.

The MP says he is to meet with families that lost their homes in the fires today, to better ascertain information on the number of persons affected.
