Ombudsman mobilizes police liaisons for upcoming East Portland by election

by March 29th, 2019

In anticipation of the upcoming East Portland by-election next Thursday, the Office of the Political Ombudsman has mobilized a team of JCF liaison officers drawn from police divisions across Jamaica.

In a recent meeting, Political Ombudsman Donna Parchment Brown met with the detective sergeants, assigned by the Commissioner of Police.

The forum focused on several acts concerned with the role of the Political Ombudsman, fitting political conduct, campaign financing, among other issues.

Speaking in an interview with Irie FM News, Mrs. Parchment Brown noted, that the session also served to provide information and guidance on the investigative role of the officers, and the importance of timely documentation and reporting.

The Political Ombudsman says, while the liaison officer in Portland has been doing a good job, additional support will be provided to the Portland team.

She stressed that normal prosecution of wrongdoers for breaches must continue alongside the actions of the political ombudsman, in dealing with reports and complaints.

Mrs. Parchment Brown says the national elections of 2016 and subsequent by-elections have provided ample examples of the potential breaches of the law and standards within the political space, which must be addressed before national elections.
