Labour Ministry disputes claims of farm work applicants being rejected because of soft hands

by March 29th, 2019

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security is disputing claims in the public domain, that applicants to its Canadian farm work programme are being turned-down, because they have soft hands.

Deputy Chief Liaison Officer in the Jamaica Liaison Service, Kenneth Phillips, says the physical build and capability of applicants is important to employers, so, these things are taken into consideration, however, absolutely no one has been rejected, simply because their hands are soft.

He says, applicants are expected to, among other things, be able to read and distinguish colours, have a firm grip, and not be overweight.

Ideally, applicants should also be taller than 5 feet 5 inches.

Mr. Phillips says, liaison officers must ensure, they select persons who demonstrate they are suitable to participate in the programme, to facilitate its sustainability so that the programme will continue to benefit current and prospective farm workers.

The ministry notes that the overseas employment programmes aim to improve the economic status of workers, and it will continue to be guided by the ground rules, as set out by the employers.
