St Ann Labour Day Parish Project

by May 21st, 2015

The St. Ann Parish Council has chosen The Widow’s Mite Children’s Home as the site of this year’s Labour Day Parish Project.

Labour Day will be observed on Monday, May 25, under the theme: “Labour of Love, Nurturing Our Children”.

At the launch of National Workers’ Week and Labour Day earlier this month, Prime Minister, Portia Simpson-Miller said work should be done with the intention of building play areas across the island for the nation’s children.

During the recent monthly meeting of The St Ann Parish Council, Chairman, Desmond Gilmore asked Councillors to suggest projects, which could be considered for The Parish Project.

Among them were The Cawley Basic School, The Windsor Heights Basic School, The Widow’s Mite Children’s Home, The Discovery Bay Play Field and Salem Basic School.

After a vote, The Widow’s Mite Children Home in Murray Mount was chosen.

Mayor Gilmore said The Home would be contacted and a technical officer would also be dispatched to assess the situation and to determine whether preliminary work would have to be carried out prior to Labour Day.

In the meantime, Mayor Gilmore says The Council will be providing $35,000 to each Councillor to carry out Labour Day projects in their respective divisions.

He said he was not sure of the amount allocated for The Parish Project but he did not expect it to be less than $100,000, which is the amount that was provided by The Labour Ministry for last year’s parish project.
