Opposition PNP: court ruling on NIRA/ NIDS validates stance

by April 12th, 2019

The Opposition People’s National Party says the court ruling in the NIDS challenge has validated the stance of the party.

The Constitutional Court today (Apl 12) struck down the National Identification and Registration Act.

The Opposition had challenged aspects of the act as being unconstitutional.

Opposition Leader, Dr. Peter Phillips says the party is vindicated in its stance, that provisions of the act infringed the rights of the Jamaican public.

He stated, that the constitution being the supreme law of the country, must be respected by all governments.

Dr. Phillips says every attempt was made to have the legislation given a thorough examination before being passed.

He was speaking at a press conference, following the constitutional court’s ruling, today.

There were 184 amendments to the legislation made in the Senate.

Meantime, the Opposition says there needs to be an inclusive approach taken to any legislation to establish a National Identification System.

This after the court ruled, that the act to bring about the National Identification System (NIDS) is null and void and of no legal effect.

Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips says there has to be more dialogue on the matter.

Dr. Phillips says there is much to be gained from a National Identification System.
