Health Ministry on drive to immunize unvaccinated children

by April 24th, 2019

As concerns mount over measles infections in the region, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jacqueline Bisasor-McKenzie, says the Health Ministry will be actively seeking out children who are unvaccinated for the disease so that they can be immunised.

Speaking in an interview with Irie Fm News, Dr. Bisasor-McKenzie noted that while the majority of the population is immunized against measles, there are pockets of children who are susceptible.

Dr. Bisasor-McKenzie said specific parishes will be targeted in the drive to improve MMR vaccination coverage.

Meanwhile, despite a decrease in the uptake of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine at public health facilities, there is a 96 percent coverage for students entering the nation’s schools.

Dr. Bisasor-McKenzie noted that despite low levels in the early years, annual checks have shown an increase in the coverage by the age of six years.
