Police warn women about taking robot taxis following reports of sexual assault

by May 7th, 2019

The Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) is urging females using public transport to take measures to ensure their safety.

The alert comes as detectives have received three reports of females alleging they were sexually assaulted by men who posed as drivers and/or passengers of unregistered taxis.

The most recent incident occurred on Sunday.

Head of CISOCA Senior Superintendent Charmaine Shand says the incidents occurred in the corporate area and involved unregistered or motor vehicles with white plates.

SSP Shand says each of the assaults occurred at day time between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

In light of this, persons are being reminded to remain vigilant when taking public passenger vehicles.

SSP Shand wants female passengers to take note of the vehicles and take pictures before boarding the taxis and use social media among other methods to share the information with family members or friends.

CISOCA says persons who may have been victims of sexual assaults are encouraged to report incidents by calling 876-926-4079.

Additionally, anyone with information that can assist investigators to nab the culprits is being asked to contact the CISOCA detectives, or 311.
