Concerns raised about management of Retirement dump

by May 20th, 2019

In the wake of a fire at the Retirement dump in St. James, several stakeholder groups have raised concern about the effectiveness of the management at the facility.

The fire which broke out at the site early Saturday has left several neighbouring communities blanketed by smoke.

CEO of the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) Suzanne Stanley says the recurrent outbreak of fires at disposal sites across the island continues to negatively impact the population and is cause for great concern.

Miss Stanley notes that she is seeking further updates from the state as to what’s the cause of the fire.

Meantime, President of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce Winston Lawson is calling for a review of the management of the disposal facility.

And, the St. James Health Department says it is working with all the relevant agencies to closely monitor the smoke nuisance resulting from a fire at the retirement dump.

The department notes that while there is no open fire, there is persistence of smoke nuisance and as such persons are asked to avoid exposure to the smoke by minimizing outdoor activities among other precautions.
