JFJ calls for cops to get more training in mediation & de-escalation tactics

by June 8th, 2019

Human rights lobby group Jamaicans For Justice (JFJ) has called on the police force to ensure that officers get more training in mediation and de-escalation tactics.

This in the wake of reports that a retired deputy superintendent of police was pepper sprayed by a constable, during a traffic stop.

JFJ Policy & Advocacy Manager, Monique Long said while the group acknowledges and welcomes the use of non-lethal devices such as pepper spray, there should be clear guidelines as to its use.

Long added that while civilians should comply with lawful orders, the police also should obey the use of force policy regulations.

She noted that, as shown in the video of the pepper spraying incident, the constable’s actions were unnecessary.
