Jamaica’s senior reggae girls lost their historic opening game at the 2019 FIFA/Women’s World cup in France this morning, after going down 3-nil to South American Giants Brazil 3-nil in Grenoble.

It was the 34 year old goal scorer Christane who came up big for the South Americans scoring all three goals, a glancing header in the 15th minute, a shot that bounced on the underside of the bar in the 50th minute and over the goal line, and then a 64th minute free kick in the contest to give Brazil all three points in the one way contest.

While Jamaica fell apart defensively, offensively there were some fair efforts with Khadijah Shaw in the box, but overall the Jamaican just could not penetrate well enough to score.

Jamaican goal keeper Sydney Schneider came up big on several occasions to deny Brazil from extending the scorelines, and saved a penalty on the day to help Jamaica end with a scoreline that could have been worst.

Brazil had 7 shots on target, 4 more than Jamaica. The South Americans also bossed possession with 57 percent to Jamaica’s 43, but Brazil was guiltier with 14 fouls compared to Jamaica’s 9.

In the three yellow cards issued Brazil picked up two ….one to defender Daiane and the other to the oldest player at the tournament at 41……defensive midfielder Formiga, while Reggae Girl’s captain Konya Plummer was also shown yellow for dangerous tackle.

Earlier this morning in the group Italy turned back Australia 2-1. So after the first set of games in the group, Brazil leads the standings on 3 points, the same as Italy who lies second, but with an inferior goal average.

Australia comes next with the reggae girls at the football of the table.
