Windies crash out of World Cup after defeat to India

The West Indies are out of the running to secure a place in the semi-finals at the ICC World Cup after they crashed to a 125 run defeat to India in the do or die clash at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Chasing a victory target of 269 the Windies folded miserably for 143 in the 35th over.

Mohammed Shami was the destroyer-in-chief for India bagging 4 for 16 while there were two wickets each for Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Debutante Sunil Ambris was the leading scorer for the Windies with 31 while Nicholas Pooran made 28 and Shimron Hetmeyer 18.

Earlier India, winning the toss and electing to bat, posted 268 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs.

Captain and Man of the Match Virat Kohli led the way with 72 while Mahendra Singh Dhoni ended unbeaten on 56.

Lokesh Rahul who cracked 48 at the top of the order and Hardick Pandya, who added 46, were also among the runs.

Kemar Roach (3-36) was the top West Indian wicket-taker. He was aided by Sheldon Cottrell (2-50) and captain Jason Holder (2-33).

India with the result moved to second on 11 points to boost their semi-final hopes while the Windies who occupy the number 8 spot on 3 points are out of the running.
