Govt and occupants of Garvey’s house reach resolution

by July 24th, 2019

Efforts by the government to reach an agreement with the occupants of the boyhood home of National Hero Marcus Garvey have reportedly had success following a meeting on Monday.

Culture Minister Olivia Grange told the lower house yesterday that she and Member of Parliament for North East St. Ann Shahine Robinson met with the Johnson sisters Monday, where an agreement was reached to partner with the government.

This follows years of contention over the ownership of the property in St. Ann’s Bay, disagreement over the relocation of the occupants, claims of being disrespected, compulsory acquisition by government, and intervention by the occupant’s attorney.

The building is to be restored and made into a heritage site.

Ms. Grange said the relocation process has begun.
