Indecom probing 2 fatal shootings

The Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) says it is probing two separate fatal shooting incidents which occurred, yesterday.

In a statement posted on its website, Indecom says it responded to the incidents in central village, St. Catherine and Avon Park Crescent, Kingston 5 where 2 unidentified men were fatally shot by police.

According to the JCF Corporate Communications Unit, a man known only as ‘Lee Chin’ was fatally shot in Central Village, at about 4:00 p.m.

Assistant Commissioner of Indecom Hamish Campbell told Irie FM News that the allegations are that officers were conducting reconnaissance in the area when they were fired upon.

The officers on location requested assistance, and during a search, there was a shootout and the civilian was shot.

A 9mm pistol containing 3 rounds of ammunition was reportedly recovered from the scene.

Mr. Campbell said in the second incident which took place in Kingston, the allegations are that a group of officers was on patrol in Avon Park, about 6:50 p.m. when they accosted a group of men.

During the search of a man, a weapon was discovered and the civilian was shot.

A 9mm Glock pistol containing 13 rounds of ammunition was reportedly recovered from the scene.

Indecom says the 10 concerned officers in both incidents were interviewed and their accounts recorded.

All were served with notices to furnish statements.

The officers’ weapons were also taken.
