Opposition says corruption investigation agency plunged into uncertainty

by September 2nd, 2019

The Opposition says the corruption investigation apparatus of the state has been plunged into uncertainty.

Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips says the resignation of the former Contractor General Dirk Harrison a week ago, and the resignation of Chairman of the Integrity Commission Justice Karl Harrison, highlight the crisis surrounding the body.

News came today that the chairman of the integrity commission submitted his resignation.

Dr. Phillips says the developments signal that there needs to be an urgent review of the operations.

The opposition leader is also reiterating his call for the immediate establishment of the parliamentary oversight committee of the Integrity Commission as mandated by the Integrity Commission Act.

He also insists that this is an appropriate time for a review of the act to be undertaken given recent developments at the agency.

Dr. Phillips says a joint select committee should review the act governing the agency at the earliest date.

In May this year, the Opposition Leader moved a motion in parliament, calling for the strengthening of measures for the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of acts of corruption.

The motion spoke to the importance of the work and functions of the commission and that public confidence in the commission and the commissioners is critical in the fight against corruption in public life.

Dr. Phillips states that the uncertainty surrounding the Integrity Commission in the face of  public concerns about the cancer of corruption plaguing the government, must  be urgently addressed.
