Celebrations commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jamaica’s cultural icon Louise Bennett-Coverley, better known as “Miss Lou” will be held locally and internationally.

The series of events to celebrate her life as a poet, advocate, and social commentator with tributes across the island is organized by various agencies including the National Library of Jamaica, Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) and Bureau of Gender Affairs. The festivities which started with a church service on Sunday, September 1, will run over a period of 100 days.

Meanwhile, there will be two events in South Florida organized by the Louise Bennett Heritage Council to celebrate the centenary of Miss Lou. Dubbed Miss Lou Full 100, the events will be held in Palm Beach on Friday, September 6, and Coral Springs on Saturday, September 7.

Miss Lou popularized all aspects of the Jamaican folklore including songs, dances and children’s games.

September 7 will mark what would have been her 100th birthday.
