Samuda defends decision to end schools in Kingston early due to JUTC driver strike

by September 24th, 2019

Opposition Spokesman on Education, Reverend Ronald Thwaites has chastised the Education Ministry for advising schools administrators to dismiss classes early, due to the strike by some Jamaica Urban Transit Company drivers.

Several schools in the corporate area were impacted by the strike as students, teachers and ancillary workers found it difficult to get to school.

The police in offering help, used their buses to transport some persons, especially children.

Speaking in parliament this afternoon, Reverend Thwaites said the decision to send home children only compounded the situation.

He said the children would have been safer at school.

But minister with responsibility for education Karl Samuda shot back at Reverend Thwaites, stating that the decision to end school early was the right one.

Samuda added that he will not put students at risk.
