Justice Ministry looking to repeal Dog Liability of Injuries legislation

by September 26th, 2019

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says the Dogs Liability of Injuries act will soon be repealed.

Noting that the law has been around since 1887, Chuck says, this law only provides for compensation when a person is injured or dies due to being attacked by a dog.

He says, the law does not allow for criminal prosecution,   only for civil liability.

Mr. Chuck states that the legal reform department, has put forward proposals to be discussed at cabinet and later in parliament.

He adds that, this proposal would force owners to control their dogs in a bid to prevent people from being victims of dog attacks.

Using other countries as examples, Chuck noted that licenses for dogs could help to make dog owners more accountable.

He added that, another proposal would be to ban dogs that are known to be dangerous.

The minister was speaking at a press conference, at the ministry’s Constant Spring offices, in Kingston, today.
