Who will win the 2020 Reggae Grammy?

With only two days to go before the recording academy makes the highly anticipated announcement of the nominees for the 62nd annual Grammy awards, reggae/dancehall fans have been speculating on who will make the final cut and earn the coveted honor of being nominated for a Best Reggae album Grammy.

To be eligible to win a 2020 Grammy, recordings that have been submitted for consideration must have been released between October 1, 2018, and August 31, 2019. Out of the over 120 Reggae albums that have been submitted for consideration, some standouts among local industry players include, Third World’s ‘More Work to Be Done’ executive produced by four-time Grammy winner Damian Marley, Marcia Griffiths ‘Timeless’, ‘Never Ending’ by Beres Hammond, Jah Cure’s ‘Royal Soldier’ ‘Loyalty’ by Grammy-winning group Morgan Heritage, and Koffee’s ‘Rapture’ EP which by virtue of having the minimum 5 songs required, and surpassing the minimum 15 minute mark with 16 minutes of playing time, could also be in the mix for a nomination.

Some outside reggae albums to look out for include Steel Pulse’s ‘Mass Manipulation’ and Californian reggae band Stick Figures ‘World on Fire’ which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard reggae charts, as the only reggae album in a year since Shaggy and Sting’s Grammy-winning 44/876 to sell over 10,000 copies in its opening week.

The full list of Grammy nominees across 84 categories will be announced this Wednesday, November 20, in a live stream on the Grammy’s website, and across Facebook, and Twitter, starting at 8:20 am. The winners will then be revealed at the 62nd annual Grammy awards, in a live telecast on January 26, 2020.
