by January 21st, 2022

Head of the Accompong Maroons, Chief Richard Currie says he has been excluded from a meeting between Maroon Colonels and the government.

Richard Currie revealed this morning (January 21) that the four elected chiefs met last Sunday to discuss the state of affairs of maroons and relations with the government.

He adds the meeting decided on how they would address a number of the issues, including working on documents to submit to the government.

According to the Chief, it was also decided that any meeting with the government would involve all the chiefs for the maroon communities.

However Chief Currie claims that in the last 24 hours, the other chiefs changed their position.

Recently in responding to questions about funding of projects in maroon communities, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said there is no other sovereign authority on the island than the government. The maroons have said they are a sovereign people.

Chief Currie states that the maroons want a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the challenges facing the maroons and remain resolved to work with the government.

Currie is calling for proper dialogue around the rights of the indigenous people.
