by November 17th, 2019

Minister without portfolio, in the Ministry of Agriculture, J.C Hutchinson is committed to dealing with challenges in the sector and to implement suitable solutions to boost agriculture and the country’s economy.

That’s according to Hutchinson’s international consultant, Dr. Omer Thomas.

Dr. Thomas told Iirie Fm News that, Hutchinson’s section of the ministry is ready to transform the sugar industry from its challenging state, to one of prosperity.

He explains that, some of these challenges include, low production and productivity of sugar; massive illegal importation of sugar; and the reduction of its use in Jamaica.

He adds that, the Holland project, in St. Elizabeth, has been successful so far, and is a model project for transformation in agriculture, in the Caribbean.

Approximately 220 small farmers received plots earlier this year, to cultivate on the two thousand, four hundred acre farm, established at Holland Estate, in the parish.

This project is a part of the government’s commitment to get lands in the hands of farmers, in order to boost agricultural production.
