Aiken’s Firebirds suffer narrow loss to champs Sunshine Coast in Queensland derby

Jamaican shooter Romelda Aiken despite scoring a team high 33 goals from 39 attempts was unable to prevent the Queensland Firebirds from suffering a narrow 58-57 loss to defending champions Sunshine Coast Lightning.

The result that saw the Firebirds dropping to 4th on 41 points after 9 rounds in the Suncorp Super Netball League.

Caitlin Bassett, meanwhile, led the way for the Lightning, with a game high 34 goals – including the game winning shot as time expired.

The defending champions with the result are up to 5th on 39 points – 11 behind first place West Coast Fever.

The Fever, who include Jhaniele Fowler, are on 50 points.

Fowler over the weekend became the first player this season to score over 500 goals after sinking a game-high 62 goals to lead the Fever to a 70-57 win on the road against Magpies Netball.

The top three is completed by Giants Netball on 46 points and Kadie-Ann Dehaney’s Melbourne Vixens on 42.
