Aisha Praught wins steeplechase gold at Commonwealth Games

Jamaica won a third gold medal inside two days at the Commonwealth Games when Aisha Praught won the women’s 3000m steeplechase final

Praught secured the historic victory in a time of 9:21.00 seconds to upstage the Kenyan Celliphine Chepteek Chespol who took silver in 9:22.61 seconds.

Jamaica also won silver and bronze in the women’s 400m final through the efforts of Anastasia Le-Roy and Stephanie-Ann McPherson.

Le-Roy placed second in a personal best 50.57s while McPherson took bronze in 50.93s. The race was won by Amantle Montsho of Botswana in a season’s best 50.15s.

Jamaica’s medal tally now stands at 12 (3 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze).

Action in the men’s long jump saw Tajay Gayle (PB 8.12m) finishing 4th and Damar Forbes (7.88m) ending in 8th.

The women’s 200m final will be contested by double Olympic gold medallist Elaine Thompson, Sherica Jackson and Shashalee Forbes.

Thompson secured automatic qualification when she placed second in her semi-final in 22.95s behind Shaunae Miller-Uibo (22.48s) of the Bahamas.

Jackson advanced after logging a personal best 22.28s to win semi-final one while Shashalee Forbes (22.93s) was second in semi-final three.

On the men’s side Warren Weir will be Jamaica’s lone representative after squeezing through as the 8th qualifier after placing 4th in his semi-final in 20.62s.

Defending champion Rasheed Dwyer (20.82s) who finished 4th failed to make progress along with Kenroy Anderson who was disqualified.

Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls meanwhile tasted defeat for the first time after going down to a crushing 72-51 loss to Australia. A result that sees them ending second in Pool A and also sees them facing Pool B winners England in the semis.

Jhaniele Fowler-Reid led the way with a game high 30 goals from 32 attempts while Caitlin Bassett and Caitlin Thwaites added 22 goals each for the Aussies who will next face New Zealand.

In other action earlier today, the men’s table tennis doubles team of Simon Tomlinson and Kane Watson were beaten 3-love by Nigeria in their round of 32 encounter.

In squash, Chris Binnie and Lewis Walters also lost 2-0 to the Australian pair of David Palmer and Zac Alexander while in badminton Dennis Coke and Katherine Wynter both posted wins in the men’s and women’s singles.

Coke was a 21-14, 21-17 winner over Victor Munga of Kenya while Wynter had a 21-18, 21-15 win against Aisha Nakiyemba of Uganda.

Action in the swimming pool saw Yona Knight-Wisdon finishing 4th in the men’s 1m springboard final with 388.65 points.
