Alia Atkinson advances to 50m butterfly final at Commonwealth Games

Reigning national sports woman of the year Alia Atkinson is still on course to win a second medal in swimming at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast.

It comes after she secured a spot in the final of the women’s 50 metre butterfly.

Atkinson, who won silver in the women’s 50 metre breaststroke, cemented a place in the championship round of the butterfly after clocking 26.84 seconds to finish third in semi-final one.

The race was won by Australian Cate Campbell (25.56 secs) ahead of another Aussie Holly Barratt (25.88 secs).

Atkinson, who had also finished third in her preliminary round, returns to the pool Saturday evening at 8:55pm Jamaica time where she will contest heat 4 of the women’s 100 metre breaststroke.

Action on day three also saw Reis Beckford failing to finish among the medals in artistic gymnastics. The 26 year old ended 16th after contesting the men’s individual all-round final.

The Jamaican women’s basketball team meanwhile suffered a crushing 80-49 loss to New Zealand – a result that sees them second in Pool B on 3 points from 2 games.

Cyclist Oshane Williams – the other Jamaican in action on day 3 –failed to finish in heat one of the men’s 15km scratch race. He is scheduled to return to action in the qualifying round of the men’s 40km points race where he lines up in heat 2.

Jamaica after action on day three still remains in 13th place on the medal table with one silver.

Host nation Australia leads the way with 20 gold, 17 silver and 20 bronze (57 overall).

England is second with 14 gold, 12 silver and 6 bronze with Canada third on 5 gold, 7 silver and 6 bronze.
